Leah R. Fulin, 16, of Minneapolis, had just crossed the bridge and was on the Washington Avenue exit when it collapsed behind her.

“Most of the cars that were on the bridge went into the river,” she said. “There was a whole bunch of smoke when concrete breaks like that. There were people screaming.”

Of course, a LOT of smoke when "concrete breaks like that". And molten steel, Leah, remember? You saw molten steeeeel... Remember?

A Minnesota Miracle

Wednesday afternoon could have added even more woes to the White House. America's first and only Muslim congressman, Keith Ellison, appeared on CNN's Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer to discuss some scorching anti-Bush comments he had made on July 8 to constituents in Minneapolis, in which he had compared 9/11 to the Reich stag Fire, and George Bush to Adolph Hitler. In 1933 Hitler used the Reich stag Fire, carried out under his orders, to establish a dictatorship in Germany.

Ellison's analysis is accepted by most of the Muslim world, much of the non-Muslim world, and a growing minority of Americans. Rather than defend it, though, Ellison backed down with apologies in his interview with Blitzer, saying that his remarks were a "rookie mistake," never to be repeated.

Perhaps Ellison's retreat from his remarks was an attempt to stave off the disaster that frequently befalls those who disrupt the political paradigm. If so, it didn't work. Two hours after Ellison's mea culpa, his congressional district suffered a freak disaster with the collapse of the I-35 bridge into the Mississippi River.

One man's loss is another's gain, though. In the news, the collapse of the Minneapolis bridge supplanted the collapse of the al-Maliki government and the Bush White House for the rest of Wednesday..., then Thursday..., then Friday. By Saturday the congressman who had accused the unitary executive of treason was with Bush himself, taking a tour of his afflicted district, and begging for the relief of federal funds.

Ellison's statement really was remarkable -- especially coming from someone who knows that just by virtue of being Muslim, "people" like Glenn Beck are going to accuse him of being anti-American.

The other thing I found very strange was this: we turned on local news that day at 5 pm, one hour after the collapse (which was at 4 pm our time) and almost the entire half hour was coverage of the disaster. Immediately following was the NBC Nightly News which said nothing. Here on the West Coast, it's very typical to be shown a special "Western Edition" of the national news whenever some major shit goes down after the people in the east have seen their version -- and it's not like there wasn't being covered by journalists crawling all over the scene with their cameras and satellite uplinks. It was as if they didn't know what to say, because they had not yet received "the memo" which would indicate whether it was to be framed as terrorism or not. (During the coverage I did see -- which continued after the national news, I kept waiting for the hair-trigger "We know it was not terrorism" statement from some official, which did finally come after what seemed like a long time -- compared to the steam pipe rupture in Manhattan, for instance.)

The hazy hypothesis that began forming in my mind went something like this: What if some entities -- possibly connected to a foreign government, perhaps to ours, probably to both -- are chomping at the bit to get the 911-2B party started and/or are doing a bit of arm-twisting trying to get the cooperation of other more LIHOP-ish factions of the PTB? What if the steam pipe rupture and the bridge collapse were in fact attacks on us by the forces behind 9/11 or some segment thereof, and this fact is being kept secret as other tendencies within the power structure try to wriggle out of their deal with the devil?

I have thought for some time that this might be an explanation for TWA 800 -- that it was an attack intended to get the ball rolling a la 9/11, except that somebody didn't play along, and thus a terrorism-quashing theory about as absurd as the pancake collapse was devised. (My pilot buddy says he didn't know for sure that a missile had been involved until the official report came out -- because the scenario it described was an aerodynamic absurdity on its face.)

I also keep flashing on the image of the school bus in the middle of the collapsed bridge. What a disaster that would have been if instead of coming to rest in their bus, battered and bloodied but able to crawl out, they had plunged into the water. I can imagine some evil mofo waiting with detonator in hand, watching the bright yellow vehicle approach the bridge and trying to time it just right but failing.

All of this is pure speculation, of course.
