musique
Liszt - Hungarian Rhapsody (though I will never be able to separate it in my mind from the old woody woodpecker cartoon featuring woody playing it on a saloon piano that ends up on a train that ends up at the bottom of a cliff...)

Lucio Battisti - La Canzone del Sole
Erasmo Carlos - Manchas e Intrigas
Miguel Bosé - Amante Bandido
Caetano Veloso - Panis et Circensis (and the rest of the Tropicália movement, its bands, songs, politics, philosophy... eu quiseira ser brasileiro mesmo!!)

phosphorescent - listen to live shit at daytrotter.com his van is pimped-out!
the ponys - nothing too political, not too dangerous, just good rock from chicago
andrew morgan - a recent harvard master's recipient, now running at night because it's too hot during his unemployed days.
elvis perkins - his mother died in one of the wtc plane crashes. i asked him about 9/11 and he said it was too far gone and there are more important things to worry about. i did come back to him later and looked him in the eyes and told him that "the truth will prevail." yeah, kind of corny, but whatever...he looked at the stage lights and reluctantly nodded in agreement. turn away and get the guitar case.
Keep 'em coming!
I find a convenient way to check out the recommendations to be SkreemR.com -- it's not perfect, and the more you stray from mainstream, the lesser your chances of scoring hits, but do give it a try.
RT: Check out "Ze Ramalho - Frevo Mulher"
Cass: "Loreena McKennitt" might be for you -- Personally, I dig "Bonny Portmore", especially
Give me a heads up if you found something worthwhile, please. I'm curious.

Running on repeat, lately:
Thievery Corporation - Heaven's Gonna Burn Your Eyes [This is an amateur video, but -- being the minimalist I am -- I'm lovin' it!]
Darn pre-xmas sentimentality.
Remember this guy?
He's a guilty pleasure for me -- or was, before he sort of reconstituted himself and went on tour -- now I feel less embarassed about loving this song:
rich text problem with embedded vids
I'm going to switch the rich text default to off (if I can figure out how!) since it makes embedding vids a pain!
how to disable default rich text (solve embedding problem)
Go to My Account / EDIT / Tiny MCE settings
and select disabled for the default. when you want to use rich text (for easy pics and hyperlinking, etc.) just click on enable in the comment you are posting...
can someone think of a new poll?
the thanksgiving one is quite dated by now (tho I just threw out the Turkey from my fridge this morning... eek)
But why is it doing that?
Embedding videos was working fine before.

Honestly: Never heard of him, before
Did he have a hand in Dolby, the noise suppression system? Anyway, really oldskool music -- all hail the synthesizer!
PS: You should NEVER feel guilty for liking any piece of music. EVER.Â
I was in line at the video store...
and the movie they were playing had this song in the soundtrack, which reminded me of my long-ago-burgled Johnny Clegg collection, so I went poking around on YouTube. There's nothing like an apartheid-era group of half white, half Zulu musicians to get me all choked up. I'm making it my Xmas greeting to the denizens of WTCD -- be sure to look for some freaky 9/11 foreshadowing at around the 2:35 mark.
And for that "other" apartheid state, some advice.
"One man, one vote in a unitary state."

That's where you can all catch a brief glimpe of America's shining moment 38 years ago when our brave astronauts were bouncing around on the moon. It's such a tragedy that NASA lost all that film of the six-odd trips to the moon that we made four decades ago. Someday when we figure out how exactly we did it it will be nice to see new scenes like that in HD technicolor, eh what? Thanks Cass for these vids!
just the way it is
the only original version of this song I could find on youtube was the background music for "Ben's life". Ben would seem to be an ok guy and gets some flak in his comments for his lack of artistry, but it's x-mas so please be nice! In any case I don't think we should underestimate the effect that this popular song had on people's perceptions of apartheid worldwide...
Hooray for
Ben, Bruce Hornsby and Windows Movie Maker!
Tenuously related, I once tried to make a 911 movie with WMM, "cleverly" matching images of that hellish day to the lyrics of my chosen soundtrack. Hours of careful matching later and approaching completion, good ole WMM crashed and the project was returned to the last save point some eight hours before, then abandonment. Possibly a blessing in disguise.
I just hunted for a vid of the song and of course someone had already done it anyway. Ah well.
Creed - One - The most popular videos are a click away
You could have it so much better!
Unfortunately, the only video with decent audio I could find on youtube was put together by a drooling groupie. Just ignore the visuals and listen.

...The Dandy Warhols, led by Courtney Taylor-Taylor, with whom I went to grade school. (Back then, he was just Courtney Taylor.) My sister-in-law ran into him a few weeks ago (he's still local) and told him about the wedding (to my bro) which evoked a long recollection by him of *me* and some debate we had back in said grade school, in which I kicked his ass. (I have no memory of this.) Trippy. Warning: video contains nudity.

(Midsummer) Nocturn
I just heard this Kate Bush song for the first time in a long time today and went looking for it on YouTube. This is an amateur video for it, version 3 (by someone very persistent). I have mixed feelings about the video -- the underwater scenes are great, the woman dancing... not so much. And the daylight scenes don't correspond to my mental images, but whateva. I know not everyone likes Kate Bush...
Eyes Wide Open
There should be -- or more accurately -- probably is a word that I don't know for this business of adding a photo montage to audio and putting it on the tube.
