The reasons vary but most bannings have been due to the individual posting links to inappropriate material after being warned against it. This has included linking to racist websites or harping on topics known to be used to make truthers look bad like "birtherism". I sincerely regret any case where I've erred on the side of caution and thereby banned someone who was not intentionally causing trouble, but I've always suggested that those banned can re-register under a different name, since most of us are ostensibly anonymous anyway.
