
i think you hit on something there...
isn't part of the problem that Israel, i.e. Zionism, has come to meld itself with Judaism in the minds of many people including Jews themselves? this is pretty interesting, as I recall from my last trip to wikipedia on the subject the symbol was not invented by Zionists, it existed in the Jewish tradition, but not really as a unifying symbol. I could be wrong...
this also highlights something i've been thinking about Zionism, that it represents an attempt to create a secular religion alongside the religious one (I'm not making this up, I know I read it somewhere) Hence the elevation of the crimes against Jewish people during WW2 from tragedy to mythology, and the fixing of sacred numbers and symbols (the gas chamber being the modern secular Jewish equivalent of the cross for christians)
As such Zionism (and its American offspring neoconservatism) represents the danger of religion that is not easily explained away as superstition, since it convinces the modern, rational, and skeptical mind that it is based on "real" things and not on "spiritual beliefs"...
