the star of david isn't really a symbol of Judaism at all, Cass. its history seems murky and while it was certainly used by some Jews for some purposes it wasn't until the zionists came around that it got put on a flag and assumed to represent Judaism per se... a menorah might be a more appropriate symbol for Judaism...

like I said I also was irked by it at first but I think that it falls under that troublesome gray area where one is compelled to separate the gut reaction from a more nuanced consideration that can lead to fruitful discussion.

i'd be interested in hearing other peoples' take on it--if good arguments can be made for it i wouldn't think it would be a horrible thing to ask Keenan to choose a different avatar and perhaps link to the image in a gallery of sorts where it wouldn't be hidden, just not on every single page where s/he posts comments--i just think we should be careful to question our own assumptions at least once when things like this come up... thoughts?
