Internet Mind Fuck 101
Submitted by casseia on Mon, 2010-06-28 16:18.WATCH THIS MOVIE or at least the first hour or so of it. It recounts the sordid history of Josh Harris, internet pioneer and megalomaniac, whose father was away from home during most of his childhood for "international trade" purposes (uh huh). Follow his rise on the billowing surface of the dot-com bubble, and his use of millions of the dollars he amassed to build a pseudo-concentration camp art project in some adjoining basements in lower Manhattan with the help of a "retired" CIA psychologist and some Andy Warhol leftovers. In the run up to Y2K, see a motley cast of characters, including one Nico Haupt (and who knows exactly who else) move in and voluntarily subject themselves to something like a re-enactment of the Stanford Prison Experiment but with lots more nudity and heterosexual sex. (You can even glimpse Nico in the trailer below.)

There's a dearth of material about the actual "Quiet: We Live in Public" experiment online -- no wikipedia entry, for example. Here's a bit of a first person account:
In December 1999, I was one of the pod people, living in a sub-basement warren of tiered sleeping capsules, like a Japanese tourist hotel or something out of William Gibson, sleeping pallets with room for just a mattress and alarm clock. Each was also equipped with its own camera and pivoting TV monitor. We could not only tune into various live feeds being recorded and broadcast within the compound. We were also constantly on camera, producing our own flow of images. Anyone at the central control booth could watch as we ate, shat, argued, made art, fucked, etc. Theoretically, anyone in the bunker, at any time, could tune into anyone else in the bunker.
