Hypothesis versus Heresy

I finally got around to watching this trailer (amazing what a great motivator academic procrastination can be) and it strikes me as very promising. It intersects with my recent internal monologues about the scientific method and my growing belief that as a society we are turning away from what is one of the best (perhaps the best) means of collectively apprehending the truth in favor of quasi religious (or flat out religious) mechanisms for enforcing epistemological orthodoxy. I think Jones is a heretic in the best sense of the word -- a heterodox, divergent thinker who chooses the scientific method over modern dogma. The heterodox/divergent part gets him in trouble sometimes (as with his recent public remarks about man-made earthquakes) but mostly among people who have turned their backs on the scientific methods and no longer trust its power of cognitive course correction.
