I would say that we could elaborate on Nietzsche's maxim as follows: "The most perfidious way to harm a cause is to defend it deliberately with faulty arguments, or to defend it deliberately with plausible arguments but act like a jerk while doing it." The first part (the original) plays to people's logic, i.e. they can identify false arguments and infer, however incorrectly, that they are the only or best arguments in support of the cause in question. The second part appeals to people's emotion--making them viscerally dislike the messenger enough to irrationally dismiss their arguments, however sound they may be.
