As many of you may know, Portland's indymedia site is distinguished among the indymedia sites for having a thriving 9/11 truth page -- whereas indymedias like NYC's censor all 9/11 truth articles. However, Truthers have noted that the page tends to favor things that make 9/11 truth look bad and/or crazy, and thoughtful material or critiques of the movement tend not to show up (it's that pesky server!)

Because of the way 9/11 truth tends to be presented there, it is not at all uncommon to see comments like this from indymedia's leftie readers:

Looking at 911 in the larger scope of global atrocities it's nothing. You hold up these 300 Americans like it was the fucking holocaust. Looking at U.S. CIA involvement in Latin America, South East Asia, and Africa, 911 was a cake walk. Whether or not 911 was an inside job doesn't matter. Government commit atrocities everyday. 27 million children died last year from malnutrition in Africa alone. Millions more are dying from Air pollution in Indo-China. Poverty is an inside job, War is an inside job, Pollution is an inside job. Why is it when it's millions of 'foreigners' no one cares?

Take a look at there very own propaganda. Prisonplanet.com and Alex Jones are constantly playing into the anti-immigrant hystaria. 911 truth promotes a nationalistic xenophobic agenda. Take look for yourself.

Here is where an effective, articulate local 9/11 truth community could really make a difference in reaching out to people who, although obviously somewhat blinded by the glare that issues from their Great Lord Chomsky, share the fundamental goal of 9/11 truth, which is to oppose empire. You'd think, right?

Well, unfortunately, the local group has been completely taken over by right-wingers, to the point where some of us dissidents have started wondering if an organized effort at disruption might be to blame. How else to explain the group's unquestioning support for its frontman, author of the following screeds:

Now, it's just a sad fact that this guy is mentally ill. What is beyond bizarre, though, is the complete lack of response from some of the more "together" members of the group, who have continued to enable him while he has run off every competent member who doesn't like being verbally abused -- including 4 of the 5 people responsible for our very successful David Ray Griffin event in May. If you read the links (and I say give 'em a whirl just for the entertainment value) you'll note that "PC Nazis" -- those of us who are avowedly leftist -- are the "chosen ones" in terms of bearing the brunt of the unhinged accusations.

I have reluctantly come to the conclusion that Portland 9/11 Truth is a very sick puppy. I bring this to the attention of a larger audience because I think it's an extreme case of what we all have perceived as a potential threat: the conflation of 9/11 Truth with right wing nuttery. A local observer points to the VERY problematic side of the Alex Jones agenda, and the local truthers, who should be there to counter this person's impressions, are dominated by crazies who are even worse than Alex Jones. This is not good.
